X-ray Information

What is an X-ray?

An X-ray uses a small amount of radiation to create images of the body to help diagnose injury or illness.

What happens during the X-ray?

  • A radiographer explains the examination
  • You may need to remove jewellery or change into a gown
  • The scan is quick, usually around 10 minutes
  • A report is sent to your doctor within 24 hours

Risks

  • Very low radiation dose
  • Doses are kept as low as possible (ALARA principle)
  • Risk is small and outweighed by diagnostic benefit
